Sunday School Lesson (1st Grade)

Sept 9: God Speaks to Elijah in a Whisper

Planning (About two to three hours):

1. Look up the the key scriptures:

  • 1 Kings 19:1-18
  • Mattew 11:15
"15 Whoever has ears, let them hear."
  • John 10:26-28 "But you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand."

2. Ready 1 Kings 19:1-18 and summarize the store in your own words

This event from Scripture take ssome children by surprise. They're used to Bible stories where God shows in a fiery cloud or a descending dove. That the powerful God of Creation would choose to speak in a quiet voice seems odd-out of character. Yet God seldom speaks from burning bushes into th elives of most believers. As you share today;s Bible story, you'll communicate the reality that while God is speaking, children must be willing to listen to hear his voice, too.

3. Practice telling the story with your own words (from step 2)

Practice telling the story to your kids (ask them for suggestions) or maybe even record yourself on camera

4. Gather a list of questions to ask the children about the story

5. Plan an activity for kids to remember the following Bible Memory Verses

"Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!" (Matthew 11:15)

Idea: Show kids how to say the memory verses in sign language and say it with our hand and with our mouth.
